# Editing an AI first draft produces worse work than starting cold

The cost of an AI first draft is not quality. It is that the draft decides the shape of the piece before you do. Neville Medhora, a copywriter of twenty years, describes it as the output hijacking your brain — and he is describing work he still ships, not work he abandoned.

*"I go the next day and look at the page, and I'm kind of like — it's kind of flat. It's not bad. I won't say it's bad. But it also doesn't grab me. And there's something about it that I'm just like: I need to go through and update it."*

## Why editing does not fix it

*"If I write a page from scratch, I raw dog the page myself, which is much harder… then I feel like it usually comes out better. And even if I make AI give me the first draft and then I modify it, it still made it the way it wants. Whereas I notice if I come at something with just my angle with no AI, I come up with a completely different version of it."*

A first draft does not only save time. It fixes the structure, the order of the argument and the framing, before you have formed your own. Editing from it produces a different and lesser thing than starting cold — not because the sentences are worse, but because they are answering a question the model chose.

## His honest accounting of the trade-off

He does not conclude that you should always write from scratch. He concludes you have to choose:

*"We're still at a space where I can write better. The problem is I have to pick my spots, because I can write better, but it takes me three hours. And I don't got that time for everything I make."*
